Postgraduate Qualification Studies

Art Therapy

GOAL OF THE STUDIES

The goal of the studies is to gain knowledge, skills and social competences relating to art therapy as a field of science which performs stimulating, developing, regulating, corrective and therapeutic functions in art therapy practice.

DESCRIPTION

Education at Art therapy postgraduate studies is conducted in the field of substantive preparation for conducting and organizing art therapy classes with children, adolescents, and adults, both healthy and with disabilities and dysfunctions.
The studies provide qualifications for conducting classes in the field of art therapy – qualifications in the field of art therapy, prophylaxis, psycho-pedagogical diagnostics, creating educational and art therapy programmes, including the latest ideas in this field.
The studies prepare students for work in special institutions dealing with various disorders and disabilities, day-care centres, occupational therapy workshops, social care centres, school therapeutic clubs, hospices, and pain treatment clinics.

GRADUATE PROFILE

After completing the studies:

  • you will gain knowledge, skills and social competences relating to therapy as a field of science that performs stimulating, developing, regulating, correctional and therapeutic functions in art therapy practice.
  • you will be prepared to organise and conduct art therapy classes with children, adolescents, and adults, both healthy and with disabilities and dysfunctions.
  • you will learn how to select and apply methods involving various types of creative expression and artistic means in art therapy sessions.
  • you will be prepared to conduct classes in institutions run by the Ministry of National Education, non-governmental organizations and the health service.

CURRICULUM

During the three-semester studies, classes on the theory and didactics of art therapy are conducted, including: clinical psychology, basics of knowledge of art, psychopedagogy of creativity, psychopedagogical diagnosis, construction of individual therapeutic programmes, biomedical basis of human development, special needs education, choreotherapy, photography in art therapy, art therapy through music, art therapy through literature (fairy tale therapy), art therapy through visual arts, drama in art therapy, occupational therapy workshops.

LECTURERS

Classes are conducted by a highly qualified staff of specialists, scientists and practitioners engaged in art therapy.

ORGANISATION

Duration:
Number of semesters: 3
Number of hours: 500 hours (80 lectures, 395 practicals and 25 seminars)

Organisation of classes:
Classes take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., two sessions per month.

Graduation criteria:
In order to complete postgraduate studies, a student must defend the diploma thesis – an art therapy activities project.

Graduation document:
Postgraduate diploma issued by the University of Silesia in Katowice.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Candidates
The studies are addressed to people who have a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in humanities, social, artistic, medical or paramedical studies and are interested in improving their skills in conducting art therapy classes. The offer is also addressed to employees of care, educational, and therapeutic institutions, employees of cultural and educational institutions, and to people who wish to work in such institutions.

Admission criteria:
Candidates are admitted to studies according to the registration order and the result of the admission procedure (if it was conducted).

Planned date of beginning of classes: October/February

FEES

After being admitted to postgraduate studies, you may start your studies, subject to paying the fee for postgraduate studies. Payments should be made to the student’s individual account, within the deadlines specified in the agreement.
