Postgraduate Qualification Studies

Education and Rehabilitation of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

GOAL OF THE STUDIES

The aim of the studies is to prepare students to conduct a functional diagnosis, support the education process and organise revalidation classes for people with autism spectrum disorders. One of the elements is learning to design and implement development programmes for people with autism spectrum disorders.

DESCRIPTION

The studies are a response to the need for teachers and therapists in the field of holistic support, functional and educational diagnosis of children with autism spectrum disorders and their families, in kindergartens, schools and institutions, but also in the home environment. The curriculum meets the requirements set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of 25th July, 2019 on the standard of education preparing for the teaching profession.

GRADUATE PROFILE

After completing the studies, the graduate is prepared to:

  • work in the process of multi-profile diagnosis of autism and pervasive development disorders
    plan, conduct and assess the effects of classes for people with autism and overall development disorders in the institution and in the home environment
  • plan and conduct individual and group therapeutic classes with students with autism or pervasive development disorders at every stage of education and to monitor their achievements
  • cooperate with other specialists as part of diagnostic teams
  • organise professional support for people with autism or pervasive development disorders, as well as for their families
  • support a student with autism or with pervasive development disorders in a kindergarten or school setting.

CURRICULUM

During the three-semester studies, students complete courses that allow for theoretical and practical preparation for working with people with autism spectrum disorders, including classes in developmental and clinical psychology, methods of therapy for people with autism spectrum disorders, speech disorders therapy and methods of constructing individual development plans and therapeutic programmes. The curriculum also includes individual internships in specialist institutions.

LECTURERS

Among the lecturers there are teachers from the University of Silesia, practitioners from renowned educational, therapeutic and revalidation centres, including: Prof. Zenon Gajdzica, Iwona Wendreńska, PhD, Sylwia Wrona, PhD, Krzysztof Wierzbicki, MD, PhD, Tomasz Szurmik, PhD, Ilona Fajfer-Kruczek, PhD, Szymon Godawa, PhD.

ORGANISATION

Duration:
Number of semesters: 3
Number of hours: 630 (450 +180 internship)

Organisation of classes:
Classes take place once on weekends, every two weeks (possibly additionally on Friday from 3.30 p.m.)

Graduation criteria:
In order to complete postgraduate studies, a student must defend the diploma thesis.

Graduation document:
Postgraduate diploma issued by the University of Silesia in Katowice.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Candidates
Postgraduate studies are addressed to people who have completed 1st or 2nd cycle studies and/or long-cycle studies in the field of pedagogy or another field, which entitle them to work in educational, caregiving, therapeutic and other educational institutions.

Admission criteria:
Candidates are admitted to studies according to the registration order and the result of the admission procedure (if it was conducted).

FEES

After being admitted to postgraduate studies, you may start your studies, subject to paying the fee for postgraduate studies. Payments should be made to the student’s individual account, within the deadlines specified in the agreement.
